Bears in East Texas
For the first time in over half a century, black bears are returning to Texas!
The East Texas Black Bear Task Force (ETBBTF) promotes the restoration of the black bear in its historic range of east Texas through education, research and habitat management. This dynamic subcommittee of the BBCC brings together individuals, organizations and state and federal government representatives to support the recovery of this threatened species in east Texas.
The return of the bear to east Texas presents unique opportunities and challenges: opportunities to improve habitat and the environment for people and wildlife, and challenges to overcome rumor and misinformation.
We invite Texans - landowners, educators, students, wildlife biologists, law enforcement officials, conservationists, and all concerned citizens - to become champions of the recovery of the threatened Louisiana black bear in our proud state.
The success of the ETBBTF, the BBCC, and especially the bear depends on the active involvement of people at all levels and in all walks of life across the bear's historic range - and especially in east Texas.
The ETBBTF will strive to accomplish its mission through partnerships among stakeholders, credible science-driven management, cooperation and a genuine commitment to bear restoration. We follow the principles for bear recovery as outlined in the East Texas Black Bear Conservation and Management Plan (2005-2015).
